Janrey Nevado, the son of a security guard and a housewife, is the only summa cum laude of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde for this year. He gained a general average of 3.802 in BS Business Administration major in Computer Applications and proclaimed the class valedictorian.

A great honor for Dante, 46, and his wife Elena, 47, their only child's achievement because Benilde had summa cum laude only for the last six years.

Jarvey tells in the Philippine Star interview, that being a pilot was his first dream and not any business-related courses. Benilde University was not his first choice but this was the first school who gave him the scholarship needed to continue his college.

“Benilde was not my first choice of campus. I passed the UST exam for Accountancy but no scholarship was being offered. I also passed DLSU, also for accountancy, but I was told I needed one-year residency before I could apply for a scholarship,” according to Jarvey.

His father is working as a guard at School of Design and Arts Campus of Benilde in Malate, and the school informed him about the scholarship awarded to Benilde's Taft Campus for his child.

“Di ko rin sukat akalain na makakapasok siya sa Benilde kasi puro mayayaman ang nag-aaral… Malay mo, kako, may awa ang Diyos at suwertehin ka at dito ka makapasok,” Janrey's father said with happiness on his face.

Currently, Janrey is working as a science data trainer at Globe Telecom who hired him eight days before his graduation.

Janrey shared that his plan for his first salary is to buy a TV set for his mother who is right foot paralyzed because of stroke.

I BELIEVED I COULD, SO I DID As I entered college, I thought I was already an exquisitely painted masterpiece, ready to astonish even the most discerning eyes. However, the time I spent in college made me realize that I was nothing but a blank canvas that has never felt the sharp tip of a pencil nor the warmth of an eraser nor the fine bristles of a brush nor the moisture of paint on its surface. I was hardly a decent drawing or a painting, let alone a masterpiece.

However, I did not wish to remain a blank canvas that would remain unused and would accumulate dust in a corner. I once believed that I could be a different type of masterpiece, something that would not just please the eyes of the one who would see it, but also something that would have the ability to inspire others and would serve a significant purpose.

The way to becoming a masterpiece was not plain sailing. It was grueling and complicated, especially for me. There were times that I refused to be drawn on with a pencil because the sharp tip felt unbearable and to be rubbed against an eraser because of the pain caused by abrasion. I also dismissed the idea of being painted on with pigments that were not familiar to me because I was afraid that it would be a mess. If the canvas was a person, it would be an annoyingly stubborn one.

As time went by, I started to trust the painstaking process of transforming a seemingly useless canvas to a work of outstanding artistry. The sharp tip of the pencil and the abrasion caused by the eraser felt more bearable as I realized the importance of being able to have a definite and clear vision of what the resulting work would be, something which could only be achieved by repeatedly sketching and erasing curves and lines.

The inclusion of new colors unraveled fresh ideas and perspectives that would eliminate the fear to try and discover new things. Slowly, I began to unlearn all the limits I initially set. Surely, I discovered new methods and techniques that would help me to get to the goal.

Naturally, I would not have been able to be on the way to becoming a masterpiece without the help of those who have never given up on me since the beginning.

To De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, thank you for providing me a scholarship and a Lasallian education that has changed my life. I believe I speak for everyone when I say that the college has never failed to be inclusive and innovative.

I could say that Benilde developed me holistically by continually providing me opportunities for growth and development not solely focused on academic competence.

More importantly, thank you for recognizing my potential when no one else did. You made me realize that I could be a better version of myself. True enough, to say "thank you" is an understatement.

To my professors, thank you for molding and honing my skills and talents. You taught me that unorthodox ways of doing things could be better than sticking with conventional ways. Thank you for sharing your knowledge from both the academe and the industry.

You gave me an edge that I could take advantage of when I enter the corporate world. The demanding and seemingly unreasonable requirements you had given acted as the pressure that turned a diamond in the rough to a polished one. You also showered us with love and care that go beyond the call of duty. Special thanks go to Miss Jel Enriquez, the best thesis adviser and mentor anyone could ask for.

To my friends, thank you for not giving up on me despite my stubbornness. You taught me that college was not just about studying but also about having fun. Thank you for inspiring me to always stay motivated and to always keep my eyes on the prize while also teaching me to keep my feet on the ground. I am so proud to have met you along my journey.

I would like to make a special mention to the Interrobang squad: Mark Anthony Arasa, Alvinne Asejo, Rechille Baguindo, Charlotte Calma, Irene Carmona (I did not forget you this time, Charles Rey E. Diomampo, Anthony Nagallo, Eric Peña, Marco Baltero Santos, and Ian Gerard Santiago. I love you guys!

To my parents and relatives, thank you for all the sacrifices you made to make this graduation possible. Thank you for being my inspiration and my source of strength to always give my 100%. Thank you for EVERYTHING.

Above all, I thank God for giving me my parents, friends, mentors, and everyone who had been a part of my college journey. You brought me into this world as a blank canvas and provided all the tools, techniques, and materials needed to turn a piece of cloth into a masterpiece.

You are a master painter who gave life to this wonderful world. Of course, I cannot say that I am finally a masterpiece for we are all masterpieces in the making. What I can say with certainty is that I am on the right track to becoming one.

To my fellow Benildean graduates, please remember that: "Nobody else gets to live your life. You're the artist. Paint your picture. Dream your masterpiece into being." Carpe diem!
